The New UEFA Format: What Actually Changed

For twenty years, European nights followed the same rhythm: eight groups of four, six matchdays, top two go through. From 2024/25, UEFA tore that up. Heading into 2026/27, the Champions League, Europa League and Conference League all run on a new shape — and once you see it, the old format feels small.

One league, not eight groups

The headline change: there are no groups anymore. All 36 teams sit in a single table — one "league phase." Instead of playing the same three opponents twice, every club faces different opponents, drawn from seeded pots. In the Champions League and Europa League that means eight matches each — two opponents from each of four pots, one at home and one away. The Conference League runs leaner: six matches, one opponent from each of six pots.

More matches that actually matter

Under the old groups, a team could be through — or out — with a game to spare. The single table fixes that: with everyone chasing a top-eight finish (and a bye to the Round of 16), even matchday eight can swing a club from a direct spot to a play-off — or out altogether.

• 1st–8th: straight to the Round of 16.
• 9th–24th: into the knockout play-offs, a two-legged round for the last eight spots.
• 25th–36th: eliminated.

A draw with real rules

The fixtures aren't random. A club can never draw a team from its own country, and it can face at most two clubs from any single other country. Those protections apply to the league-phase draw — they disappear in the knockouts, so a same-country tie can happen once the bracket begins.

The knockouts start earlier

From the play-offs onward it's a straight bracket to a one-match final. Seeding shapes the path, and the home/away order of the quarter-finals and semi-finals is drawn.
