How the League Table Is Decided
With 36 teams in a single table, clubs finish level on points all the time. So who ranks higher? UEFA applies a fixed order of tie-breakers, one after another, until the tie is broken.
The order
Level on points, teams are separated by:
- Goal difference
- Goals scored
- Away goals scored
- Wins
- Away wins
If teams are still level after all of these, further criteria (such as disciplinary record and UEFA coefficient) apply in the official rules.
Why it matters
In a table of 36, a single goal can be the difference between a top-eight bye and a play-off — or between the play-offs and elimination. Goal difference isn't a footnote anymore; it's a lifeline.
